Coping With Hair Loss from Alopecia
About Alopecia
Alopecia areata is a general term used for hair loss; this can be a small bald patch on the head or the loss of all hair over the entire body. The general term alopecia can be used to refer to alopecia areata, alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis.
Alopecia is not life threatening but it can be distressing at times. While there are no proven effective cures for alopecia, hair can grow back spontaneously. However, the more hair that is lost, the less likely it is to grow back.
When you first get alopecia you may feel that your world has turned upside down. It may affect your relationships, work, social life and you may find it difficult to go anywhere in public. These responses are normal and understandable.
Learning To Cope
People with alopecia use many ways to cope with their hair loss. This article covers some of these methods and we hope it proves useful.
Expressing Your Feelings
Sometimes you might want to cry or shout because you feel it is unfair that you have alopecia. Do It! It’s perfectly normal to feel this way.
Holding these feelings inside is one option, and it can be beneficial at times, but you may find it makes you feel tired and irritable. Finding ways to relieve tension.
Exercise can help us relieve our feelings in a positive way. Some kinds of exercise are good for ecpressing anger, such as running, others are more calming, such as Yoga and Tai Chi. All exercise helps [...]

Your receding hairline
as you get older is probably down to male pattern baldness. There are other problems that can cause thinning hair and hair loss so it is always best to get a complete checkover by your medical practioner. If you are one of the men in the 95% group where genetics is beginning to wreak havoc on your scalp and the hair loss is becoming obvious – don’t wait until that receding hairline and a touch of scalp showing through on the crown of your head – the longer you leave it the bigger chance that the hair may be permanently lost!
The culprit can often be your hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp which can provoke male pattern baldness by causing shortening and thinning hair follicles in the hair growth cycleas explained on the front page (see picture below).
Hair Retention Programme
All is not lost if you are in the UK! You may be able to pick a restorative programme of treatments to help retain a fuller head of hair by joining the Boots Pharmacy-led, Professional Hair Retention Programme.
From their website:

* 9 out of 10 men with male pattern baldness keep their hair on the Boots Hair Retention Programme, while those not on the programme continue to experience hair loss
* 2 out of 3 men who stay on the programme for long-term treatment experience some re-growth of hair
Now that is a very strong claim from from the major high street pharmacy, but remember, if you are one of [...]

Why Does Interferon Cause Hair Thinning and Hair Loss?
I was wondering about the effects that an Interferon course had on the head hair thinning and loss and came across this explanation and recommendation for hair care. I can’t remember where I found it originally, just that I stored it on my hard drive… I think the source is in the references at the bottom.
“Interferon affects the hair follicles and changes the texture of the hair, thereby making it more sensitive to breakage. Hair loss, which has been described as a possible side effect of treatment with interferons,(1) occurs by one of two mechanisms. First, loss via a shearing or friction effect at the scalp level (often during sleep as the hair moves across a pillow) is caused by the weak, brittle nature of hair changes. ”
“Second, loss can occur via a spontaneous release of the hair from the follicle, leaving the follicle empty, which is usually seen with vigorous shampooing or brushing. Alopecia is frequently observed when therapy is continued for longer than 3 to 4 months, and is characterized by thinning and slight-to-mild hair loss. It appears to be the most common cutaneous reaction associated with interferon alfa treatment.(2) Alopecia may become more pronounced when interferon is discontinued and may continue for 1 to 3 months.(3) In general, alopecia associated with interferon is reversible. In some patients, hair regrowth occurs during treatment continuation.(1)”
“Total revealed alopecia is seen more often with high-dose interferon or long-term interferon maintenance therapy. Thinning, often [...]

Baldness remedies – what works and what doesn’t?
Written by Colin Brennan, health journalist

Thinning hair may be natural, but can cause much anxiety.

[ad#Ad-plus-sense]People have always been gullible where their hair is concerned. Queen Victoria drank silver birch wine made from sap because she believed it would cure her baldness. And despite icons such as David Beckham shaving off their locks, hair loss is refusing to become that fashionable.
Dr Andrew Messenger, a consultant dermatologist at Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, told NetDoctor: ‘Although the great majority of men learn to live with it, I think everybody would prefer not to be bald. For a very small number of men, it becomes a big issue.’
He says it is more often younger men who visit their doctor to ask what can be done about hair thinning.
Medical attitudes to thinning hair
Most doctors believe men should think deeply before using any remedies for hair loss because the treatment options are so limited.
Baldness isn’t a life-threatening condition, and it is easy to spend a lot of money trying to restore a full head of hair.
While it’s all very well being told how you ought to feel about the loss of your hair, if it starts to dint your self-esteem, it’s probably worth seeking treatment.
But Dr Messenger is clear about the limitations of medicine in this area: ‘There are only two ways to deal with baldness currently available in the UK that the evidence shows work to at least some extent.’ Neither of the medicines listed below is [...]

Hair thinning and hair loss from reactions to cancer drugs (chemotherapy).
[ad#Ad-plus-sense]Having spent 8 months attending my wife’s chemo sessions it was interesting to watch how people (including her) dealt with the various degrees of hair loss. This post is about thinning or reversible hair loss caused by the drugs used to flush out those cancer cells that might be lurking, how to cope with the thinning hair, and when it may recover.

Hair thinning or loss from cancer drugs
I think most people associate severe hair thinning or loss as one of the side effects of being treated for cancer. These drugs may cause:

Mild thinning of your hair
Partial hair loss, or hair loss in patches
Complete hair loss (alopecia)

It is generally chemotherapy used as a cancer treatment that is likely to cause hair loss – as complete hair loss is very unusual with other types of treatment. If you are lucky(?) like my wife you may only suffer from an increased hair loss that showed as a very mild hair thinning. Other people lose their hair almost overnight. The oncologist can usually tell you with some certainty beforehand the likelihood of the degree of hair thinning as some drugs are more likely to cause hair loss [...]
