Hair growth, loss and baldness Hair loss is a big worry to many people, both male and female. If you have a worrying amount of hair in the basin after shampooing, you may think you are on the way to baldness. But this is not usually the case. The 50–100 hairs that everyone loses each day often become tangled with the rest of the hair, but are washed out when we shampoo. Hold a small bunch of hair – about 15 or 20 hairs – between the thumb and index finger. Pull slowly and firmly. If more than six hairs come out there may be a problem. How hair grows. The portion of the hair that we can see is called the shaft. Each shaft of hair protrudes from its follicle, which is a tube-like pouch just below the surface of the skin. The hair is attached to the base of the follicle by the hair root, which is where the hair actually grows and where it is nourished by tiny blood vessels. Like the rest of the body, hairs are made of cells. As new cells form at its root, the hair is [...]

Hair loss is common with Interferon It is difficult to give you a exact percentage of patients who experience this problem but it is one of the side effects that patients are warned about. You also have to appreciate that the severity of this side effect varies enormously form patient to patient. Experience with hair loss (alopecia) associated with interferon or combination therapy, a couple of points stand out. One is that patients tend to feel their hair loss is more noticeable than individuals around them. In addition, the hair typically grows back. Patients on interferon may also be evaluated who have hair loss for thyroid dysfunction because thyroid problems are seen with interferon and they can cause hair loss. Finally, if patients are very bothered by the hair loss, occasionally it is suggested they consider ‘Rogaine’ (topical minoxidil) though the effectiveness of this varies considerably from one person to the next. Thinning Thinning hair or change in hair texture sometimes occurs. This may begin after the first few months of interferon therapy. It does not generally represent complete loss of hair, rather some people notice an increased amount of hair in the shower drain or loss while combing or brushing. Hair returns to normal after the course of interferon is discontinued. However, whatever part of hair loss in men is attributable to male pattern baldness is gone for good. Some people experience hair loss as a side effect of interferon, but it doesn’t always happen. It may range from [...]

LEARN HOW TO REGROW YOUR HAIR NATURALLY! [ad#Ad-plus-sense] Melanie’s hair loss problem started when she was was seven years old and her mom was brushing her hair – and found a small, perfectly round bald patch at the nape of her neck. The patch eventually filled in with new hair, but soon another patch appeared and at times she had two or three bald patches at once. Although they were well hidden beneath her longer layers of hair, just knowing they were there made her feel really uncomfortable. Her parents took her from doctor to doctor. At the time, they could give her no known cause or cure for the mysterious, but common hair follicle disorder called alopecia areata. She had to learn to live with it – until many years later. By the time she reached age 32 her hair started falling out by the handfuls and this time it wasn’t stopping. At first she thought her hair loss was a severe case of the alopecia areata she had been suffering with. Many years later she learnt she was experiencing a second type of hair loss called telogen effluvium. (Women can experience more than one form of hair loss simultaneously with one type opening the way for another type!) Otherwise healthy, the advise was to get a good wig and get on with life. Naturally being unhappy with the whole situation she just wanted to be her natural self and without hair that seemed impossible. Melanie eventually resigned herself [...]
