Can (SLS) Sodium Lauryl Sulfate cause Mouth Ulcers?

SLS Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Contribution to Mouth Ulcers While my initial interest was in hair thinning and the relationship with SLS (Sodium lauryl sulfate) in shampoo, as I investigated discussions on using SLS in products I came across other scientific papers. I found an old study which was investigating the effect of SLS in patients who had re-occurring mouth ulcers. I’ll put the link in at the end. While the study paper gets overly technical on the use of an effective denaturant Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in its role as an asynthetic detergent commonly used in toothpaste, I can reduce it to the basics here. It was noticed that a proportion of dental patients reported re-occurring mouth ulcers [recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU)]. These developments of painful, recurring solitary or multiple necrotizing ulcerations are problematic and have a difficult solution. They took 10 volunteer patients aged between 13-35, 8 men and 2 women who suffered from this multiple minor RAU and screened as otherwise healthy individuals. The participants were instructed not to change diet, lifestyle, or smoking habits (three smokers) during the trial. In order to record the number of ulcers seen during the study period all involved were given pictures of RAU and written information on recognising the signs of ulcers to allow them to record the number of ulcers in a diary. These were examined at least every 2nd week along with a visual inspection of their oral mucosa by the clinical examiner. Before the start of the study [...]

Hair Care Products Using Silk or Satin

Hair Products Using Silk or Satin Hair care products that have been strengthened with silk or satin are starting to become popular with women across the age range because they can assist in the repair of damaged hair while at the same time improving its appearance. These hair care products that include the addition of silk or satin tend to be a little more expensive than their counterparts, but fans say they are frequently well deserving the added cost. Hair is about 80% proteins, but many people do not include enough diet variety to get all the amino acids necessary to maintain these hair proteins in peak condition. Coloring, perming, or chemically straightening your hair will also consume amino acids, and so cause further damage to already fragile hair follicles. The hair care products including silk or satin are based on several years of scientific research which show that they may help improve the condition of your hair by reinforcing these necessary amino acids and so help protect hair from further damage. Users of these products claim that they see an improvement in shine, body and texture, plus smoother hair without a weighty buildup of product. They can be are an excellent choice for women who use a flat iron to style their hair, since the proteins in these hair care products are often heat activated. The pleasant smell of these reinforced hair care products is due to fortification with various botanicals, and often Vitamin E and Vitamin B to [...]

Using Shampoo

Choosing a Shampoo for Your Hair Shampoo is a product that is designed to clean the hair and nourish the scalp. By using a combination of shampoo designed for your scalp and conditioner formulated for your hair, you can establish a balanced and healthy head of hair. When you are buying shampoo, your scalp type is the most important factor, as some products are designed specifically with dry scalps in mind, while other shampoos focus on oily scalps or dandruff. Avoid buying shampoo which is packaged with conditioner, because the two products have different functions. If you use a lot of products in your hair which tend to build up over time, you should consider buying shampoo to clarify your hair. Clarifying shampoo should be used approximately once a month, because the higher acid content that strips out leftover hair products can also leave your hair dry and brittle. Dry hair will lead to split ends and broken hairs, and is something you want to avoid. If your hair and scalp are healthy and normal, use a mild shampoo designed for healthy hair. Buying shampoo formulated for your already healthy hair and scalp will maintain a healthy balance in your hair, keeping it soft, shiny, and full of volume. This type of shampoo will also keep your scalp clean, moisturized, and healthy. If you have dry hair and a dry scalp, a common combination, you will probably find yourself buying shampoo designed to moisturize your dry scalp and following with [...]

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – what is it?

What is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate? [ad#Ad-plus-sense] When manufacturers mix sulfuric acid, monododecyl ester, and sodium salt together, they can, surprisingly, come up with an everyday product that is used by much of the general human population. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), is a chemical compound used as a detergent in many beauty, household, and industrial products. In a pure state, sodium lauryl sulfate is known to emit toxic fumes in the presence of excessive heat because of thermal decomposition. But when mixed into diluted concentrations, they can be bottled and sold as your favorite brand name skin care product or cologne. Its role in these products is usually that of a foaming or a dispersal agent. For example, toothpaste or bubble baths that foam when used contain sodium lauryl sulfate, as well as products that need its components dispersed homogeneously, such as fragrance oils in body spray. However, the use of sodium lauryl sulfate has been a subject of lot of controversy. It has arguably been called one of the most dangerous ingredients in products today. Household essentials like cosmetic cleansers, bath gels, shampoos, and dishwashing detergents contain up to fifteen percent sodium lauryl sulfate. Also adapted for industrial applications, sodium lauryl sulfate is present in higher concentrations when used in floor scrubbing and degreasing solutions, due to the compound’s corrosive and grease-fighting properties. One thing about sodium lauryl sulfate that had a lot of animal rights activists protesting is its use in clinical testing. The chemical is employed as a [...]
